Wall & Roof Insulation Options
Wall insulation:
- Can I make my log home more energy efficient?
- Can the log walls be insulated?
- Can I increase the R-value of the logs?
- The answer is yes to all of these questions. If you are seeking a higher R-value, we offer two options that will significantly increase your homes energy efficiency.
Option #1:Extruded Polystyrene (white bead board) R-3.6 per 1”
- The interior log walls are strapped (1x2 furring strips 2’ O.C.)
- Cavity is filled with 2x8 sheets of rigid Polystyrene board
- Final wall covering is applied (usually tongue and groove Cedar)
- You can place up to 2” of insulation board
- Lowest cost option
- This will add an R-8.7 increase to your log wall
Option #2: Polyisocyanurate (foil faced foam) R-6.5 per 1”
- The interior log walls are strapped (1x2 furring strips 2’ O.C.)
- Cavity is filled with 2x8 sheets of rigid foil faced foam board (Polyisocyanurate)
- Final wall covering is applied (usually tongue and groove Cedar)
- You can place up to 2” of insulation board
- This will add an R-14.5 increase to your log wall
Other advantages to adding log wall insulation:
- Time and money are saved by not having to drill the log walls for electrical. A shallow groove can be routered into the log wall for the electrical wires to be recessed behind the insulation board.
- Log walls do not have to be sanded.
Roof insulation:
- 5” of rigid foam (R-32.5) insulation (standard in purlin roof system)
- Increased R-value upgrade available (R-6.5 per inch)
